Rainwater is a valuable resource - and it is falling on your roof for free! Now you can capture and store a significant amount of rainwater for use in your garden or home without losing valuable space.
There are several important factors to consider when choosing a rain tank:
Number of gallons you wish to collect. A 1000 square foot roof can collect approximately 620 gallons of water in a 1 inch rainfall. This means that even in a lighter rain storm, you will be able to fill even a large tank. The number of gallons you choose to collect depends on how you will use the water, whether it be irrigation, vehicle washing, emergency supply, etc. If collected properly, rainwater can be stored indefinitely. Make sure to build your system with a successful overflow plan to avoid flooding near the building's foundation.
Site footprint of your system. Some systems have space to spread out, while others are tight. Consider how much space is available to you, in length, width and height. Several tanks can be plumbed together for additional capacity.
Color. Many systems owners are sensitive to asthetics. While there are attractive rain tanks on the market, make sure the tank is opaque in color to inhibit algae growth, especially if the tank will sit in direct sunlight. A general rule of thumb is the darker the color, the more opaque the material and the less sunlight is getting through. The tanks Loomis sells have UV stabilizers built into the plastic to protect the tank from the harmful effects of the sun.
Construction. Solid, thick walls keep the tank strong and prevent bulging over the many years of service. Tanks should be made of high-density polyethylene and have a sturdy construction. Vertical tanks may also be braced to a fence or wall to protect against movement during strong winds or earthquakes. All Loomis rain tanks are FDA rated for the highest quality, safety and durability.
